Komatsu, a manufacturer of heavy equipment, showcased its electric excavator at the ConExpo-Con/Agg trade expo held in Las Vegas last month. The PC210LCE electric excavator, with a 20-ton capacity, had its public debut in Germany last fall at the bauma event. The electric excavator will soon be available in North America.
Benefits of Electrification
Electric-powered machinery has gained popularity in recent years due to reduced operating and maintenance costs, environmental benefits, and the ability to operate where diesel-powered equipment cannot. Electric machines require less maintenance, as there are fewer parts to maintain, and they can work in urban and indoor job sites because they have lower noise levels and no engine vibrations.
Komatsu’s Plan for Carbon Neutrality
Komatsu plans to expand its line of electric equipment due to the benefits of electrification. The company has set a target of reducing carbon emissions by half by 2030 and achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2050.
Features of Komatsu’s Electric Excavator
The PC210LCE electric excavator runs on a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 451-kilowatt-hours. It can work for up to eight hours on a single charge, making it suitable for use on job sites where access to charging may be limited. The electric excavator has a small carbon footprint, making it an environmentally friendly option for the construction industry. Additionally, it comes equipped with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Retrofit, providing access to 2D and 3D machine control and payload data to help with operational improvements such as drive accuracy and control load volumes.
