Accident Details

Construction worksites are always very risky to even pass by. Worksite accidents due to the collision of heavy equipment have become a common event that even takes the lives of people.

In this recent accident that happened in Minnesota, a similar incident was reported that has taken 4 precious lives. The highway construction was under the process and a semi-truck was moving on the terrain for a major task. At around 3:00 pm, 4 cars were coming the way and a mishap happened when they struck the moving semi-truck.

Victims included 65-year-old Vincent Dow, his 66-year-old wife Bonnie Dow, and two child passengers, 9-year-old Hope Oakgrove and Charlotte White. The four victims drove a Honda Pilot SUV and were residents of Blackduck, Minnesota.

Two additional SUVs and a semi-truck were involved in the collision in addition to the dead fatalities. A passenger in one of the other SUVs, an 84-year-old woman, and the driver of the semi-truck that caused the collision both suffered minor injuries. It is indeed a sad incident that has made a major lag back to the affected families.

What investigation has been made till now?

The state police have immediately been reported and they held the investigation state right away.

In an initial investigation, it was found that the truck’s driver, a 63-year-old man, is said to have driven unsteadily before the collision.

The witnesses saw him driving abruptly and accelerating and decelerating roughly on the highway road. Suspicion was stimulated by this erratic driving, and in a follow-up hospital interview, it was disclosed that the driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, according to the most recent reports, the car driver had not been charged with a crime. Further investigation is still under the process and the one who is held guilty will be punished.

Work Zones’ importance and safety regulations

The area where the accident happened was under construction. It is a highway that was under the repaving construction including lane closures, flaggers, and a pilot car to direct traffic through the work zone. The construction work started on August 12 and was about the completed in the middle of October.

Although work zones are necessary to preserve and enhance the quality and safety of roadways, they can present serious risks, particularly when drivers disregard safety regulations. This is why, the Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA) forces construction firms to put strict safety measures while working with heavy equipment. If the firms keep ignoring the measures, such incidents will keep happening and taking the lives of the people.

General considerations for work zone safety

Unluckily, crashes in work zones happen frequently. According to data from the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, work zone crashes in the US resulted in 891 fatalities and almost 37,000 injuries in the last few years. These figures highlight the importance of raising awareness and upholding work zone safety protocols.

Construction firms need to always hire a professional operator for heavy equipment operations. If you anyhow hire an inexperienced operator, make sure to provide him a proper training beforehand. Also, make sure the operator is aware of all the road signals and signs.

Takeaway

The deadly collision that occurred on Minnesota’s Highway 2 serves as a stark reminder of how vital work zone safety is. Road construction projects are still happening all over the nation, so drivers need to be on the lookout, follow the rules of the road, and put their own and other people’s safety first.
