Two federal grant programs have been announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation. These two programs will ensure that over $4 billion in funding is provided for spending on infrastructure projects. Under this program, various infrastructure projects will be converted.

According to reports. $1.68 billion is being invested in as many as 11 projects. These investments are being made by The National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) grant program.

Also, the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant program is due to make investments. Investment worth $2.58 billion will be made by INFRA in 36 projects. These investments will cover three projects in Phoenix and Arizona. Also, Chicago, Illinois, Providence, and Rhode Island have received investments from both programs.

A look at the projects funded

The Southwest Mixmaster Interchange Reconstruction project

Investments worth $68.6 million have been made in the Iowa Department of Transportation. This covers the Southwest Mixmaster Interchange Reconstruction project. This project lies in the Des Moines, Iowa region. This project is set to replace a six decades old, I-35/80/235 interchange. This interchange has been deemed as a dangerous one in the Iowa region. It is slated to accommodate the travel of around 2,000 vehicles each hour by the year 2050.

The project involves various constructions that will lead to the building of new flyover bridges. These bridges will start from southbound I-35/80 and extend all the way to eastbound I-235 and to westbound I-80.

The Southwest Mixmaster Interchange Reconstruction project

This is a major $336 million project in the Providence area. Dubbed as the I-195 Rhode Island Washington Bridge Replacement project, this is set to transform the area by replacing the Washington Bridge North while the I-95 mainline will undergo resurfacing followed by being restriped.

The decision involving the replacement of the bridge eventually came following many reports that the conditions were unsafe. Though initially there had been many delays, the decision to move ahead with this project has finally been made after the bridge was deemed unsafe. It is worth mentioning that the bridge has also faced partial closure since 2023.

The I-80 East Lane Addition and Shoulder Widening in Washoe County, Nevada

This is yet another project that carries an investment of $276 million. Named as the I-80 East Lane Addition and Shoulder Widening covering the area of Washoe County, Nevada, it involves widening the I-80 all the way from Vista Boulevard to the USA Parkway. The project will extend between areas of Reno/Sparks metro and Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. The project also involves building an additional lane that moves in each direction. It will also cover bridge reconstruction.

River Raisin Bridge and Interstate 75 Revitalization Project in Monroe County, Michigan

This project worth $196 million has been awarded to the Michigan Department of Transportation. It involves the building of the River Raisin Bridge and Interstate 75 Revitalization project. It is based in Monroe County, Michigan.

The construction of the bridge will be along I-75 which would be fully replaced with a new crossing. The new crossing is meant to accommodate future traffic.

The project will also cater to updating six other existing structures which will also be replaced. An additional two miles of roadway will undergo reconstruction. The River Raisin Bridge is important for traffic. According to estimates, this bridge serves as a passage for around 61,000 vehicles daily. Around a quarter of the vehicles crossing the bridge are trucks.

U.S. Transportation terms the projects ‘ambitious’ that will transform the infrastructure

The U.S. Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, said that the programs were “ambitious, complex transportation projects that will shape our country’s infrastructure for generations to come.” He also said that “this latest round of awards,” will lead to “dozens of major and much-needed projects” that had been “often difficult to fund through other means.” He expressed optimism that these projects were finally receiving “the long-awaited investments they need to move forward.”

As far as the outgoing Biden administration is concerned, the two grant programs in this term have funded 140 projects. This includes 35 large bridge projects. It also covers 85 highway improvement projects.

The projects are a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law under the Biden-Harris administration.

The projects will eventually lead to an increase in the use of earth movers’ equipment and heavy moving machinery, increasing the demand for heavy equipment for sale.
