Caterpillar, a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, has released the R2900 XE, its first diesel-electric load-haul-dump (LHD) loader designed for underground mining. This innovative machine is equipped with a range of features that improve productivity, reduce operating costs, and enhance safety.
Increased Productivity and Reduced Operating Costs
The R2900 XE is built on the same chassis as the R2900G, but with optimized component geometry, load-sensing hydraulics, and a lift arm that provides a 35% greater breakout force. The machine has a payload of 20.4 tons, accelerates 52% faster than its predecessor, and has improved machine responsiveness. It also offers a 7% higher speed on grade and is over 31% more fuel-efficient. As a result, the R2900 XE is 20% more productive than the R2900G, and owners can expect lower cost-per-ton operating expenses due to its robust design and long-lasting components.
Design and Components
The R2900 XE’s differentials and end drives have been developed to withstand the rigours of high torque and impact loads, reducing stress on the drivetrain. The machine also features a Tier 4 Final configuration with a diesel particulate filter, lower engine rpm, and improved maintenance to reduce fuel burn, heat, noise, vibration, and exhaust emissions.
Bucket and Ground Engaging Tools
The R2900 XE’s buckets come in four sizes, ranging from 7.4 to 9.2 cubic metres, and are equipped with modular Weld-on, Bolt-on Half Arrow, and Durilock mechanically attached shrouds. A variety of heel shrouds, wear plates, and bars are also available for welding on or mechanical attachment to strengthen bucket protection.
Safety and Operator Comfort
The R2900 XE has a next-generation enclosed cab that includes a temperature-controlled air circulation system, a ROPS/FOPS that isolates the operator from vibration, two emergency exits, and numerous cameras that improve visibility around the loader. The machine also features a two-pedal design with enhanced spacing and positioning for better foot control, an optional ride control system that improves cycle times and load retention, and Autodig technology that automates crucial steps in the digging cycle.
Innovative Electric Drive System
The R2900 XE’s high-efficiency switch reluctance electric drive system offers constantly variable speed control, seamless direction changes, automatic retarding controls, anti-rollback technology, and no coasting in neutral. The machine also has a longer lifespan thanks to a redesigned axle design, larger wheel bearings, larger brakes, and other features.
Integrating with Cat MineStar
The R2900 XE is fully compatible with Cat MineStar, Caterpillar’s suite of mining technologies. Mining operations can choose from a range of features, including Fleet for underground, which tracks and records cycle time, payload, machine position, and other data in real-time, Command for underground, which enables remote control operation, and Autodig technology, which automates crucial steps in the digging cycle.
